30 years of BNIX – interview with Dirk Haex, Managing Director at Belnet

1995: the internet is still in its infancy and – as is often the case with innovations – set up in very rudimentary way. However, many countries are starting to recognise the need for more organisation and efficiency, and Belgium is leading the way. That’s why in 1995 Belnet established BNIX, the Belgian internet exchange point – a platform that has been providing efficiency, performance, and stability to the Belgian internet for 30 years now, both for its participants and for end users. In fact, even this very interview has almost certainly reached your screen via BNIX.

Belnet rolls out brand new BNIX platform

Belnet, the IT partner for research, education and public services, has rolled out its brand new BNIX platform through which a large part of Belgian internet traffic passes. Thanks to the renewal, BNIX is future-proof, not only to deal with ever-growing data streams, but also to meet specific customer needs such as extra scalability, technological innovation and user-friendliness.

Belnet is the Belgian research network for higher education, research and public services. It has set up and manages the BNIX, the Belgian National Internet eXchange, since 1995.

The European Internet Exchange Association (Euro-IX) gathers 73 IXPs from around the world. It was formed in May 2001 with the intention to develop, strengthen and improve the Internet Exchange Point (IXP) community.
